Rafael Cidoncha Exhibits at the Albrecht Gallery in Berlin

The figurative artist returns to the German gallery with “Verweile doch…”, an exhibition of recent work that brings together a carefully curated selection of still lifes. A full display of mastery and technique that captures eternal instants.

The Berlin gallery Susanne Albrecht plunges into 2019 with an exhibition by one of the most significant figurative artists on the contemporary Spanish scene: Rafael Cidoncha. With work held in museums of the stature of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, the College de France (Paris) and the Baltimore Museum (USA), Cidoncha is one of the most influential painters in the sphere of international art of the twenty-first century. The gallery, which has hosted other exhibitions of his work on previous occasions, opts in this case for a selection of still lifes that reflect the artist’s enormous ability to capture an instant and turn it into something immortal. The show “Verweile doch…” will remain in the exhibition space of the Susanne Albrecht Gallery from 25 January to 9 March 2019.

The title of the exhibition derives from the celebrated phrase written by Goethe “Verweile doch, Du bist so schon…” (“Stay a while, you are so beautiful…”), and refers to the capturing of the beauty that can manifest itself in any instant. This is precisely what Cidoncha achieves in his dazzling canvases: capturing that moment in which a ray of light illuminates an object or a corner, turning the humblest subject (a small bouquet, a few bags dropped in the street) into something that transcends temporality. Through a powerful brushstroke, always in oil on canvas, Rafael Cidoncha demonstrates once again in this exhibition that his presence among the leading figures of contemporary Spanish painting is founded on an art as solid as it is personal.
