The works of Anka Moldovan (Romania, 1976) exist in that no man’s land where figuration dissolves into an abstract limbo. In them we see, and sometimes feel, the individual and collective human presence; but always through a smoked glass, a mist that vibrates with textures, reliefs and color. The Asturian city of Mieres took the artist in more than two years ago, when she decided to abandon her political career to devote herself completely to her passion: painting. After exhibiting in various cities, among them Madrid, Paris and New York, this season she opens the exhibition Eter at the Casa de Cultura Teodoro Cuesta in Mieres. The show, which can be visited between the 17th and 30th of September, is made up of a broad selection of works representative of the depth and complexity of Anka Moldovan’s pictorial point of view. Her brushwork rests on the traditional pictorial school, which the artist uses to generate a fully personal and contemporary imaginary. They are canvases that mix brushwork, palette knife and even frottage; the thick layers of matter reflect the presence of objects that invaded them and then abandoned them, leaving their imprint.

In 2014, the artist exhibited her work at the Casa de America in Madrid. The words of the cultural institution, written then to present the show, still remain valid and describe to perfection the essence of her art: “Each brushstroke hides a story, tales that each person understands according to their own experience, and this is its true essence. Asphalts, mists, ophelias, silences, mad kings, characters that come, that go, that pause and are articulated within a figurative abstraction. glazes that cover and uncover ‘non-places'”. In the painter’s own words, her canvases contain her fascination with the human being as a “container” of things, of ideas, of feelings and passions. Because, as can be appreciated in the exhibition, open to the public with free admission, the figures that appear in her images are never just passing through; their intention is to remain in the pupil of whoever looks at them. Wandering through the ether, they mix with the air; in part they blur, but they also remain.
