On the list of the 500 most highly-valued artists in the world in recent years, the name of Lita Cabellut stands out, behind only two other great figures: Miquel Barcelo and Juan Munoz. Her works deploy all the force of classical techniques, always passed through the filter of her own intensity. The artist has never ceased to acknowledge Francisco de Goya as her main influence: at last, Lita Cabellut’s paintings will meet and dialogue face to face with those of her master in the exhibition “The Victory of Silence”, which will open on 13 February at the Goya – Ibercaja Museum in Zaragoza. The show finally brings the painter’s work to Aragon, cradle of the painter whose spirit filters through the pores and the cracklings of the artist’s magnificent and disturbing canvases. Cabellut’s work has recently been exhibited in cities such as A Coruna, Barcelona or Amsterdam; from The Hague, the Dutch capital where she lives and works, her latest paintings will travel to Zaragoza to dazzle once again with her impeccable technique and her power.

“Testimony.” The creative process of Lita Cabellut (2017)

From Goya to Camaron, by way of Francis Bacon or Lucien Freud, the influences the painter acknowledges emerge from artists with tumultuous pasts, complex personalities and works that leave no one indifferent. The life of the artist herself is far from routine or traditional: after a complicated childhood, at the age of 13 she was adopted by a family that took her to visit the Museo del Prado. There the artist that Cabellut carried within revealed herself, a magnificent budding painter who begged her parents to take her to painting classes. At 19 she obtained a scholarship that allowed her to study in Amsterdam to learn classical techniques and fresco painting. Thanks to this training, the artist’s canvases acquire that depth patinated with powerful cracklings. In 1978 Lita Cabellut settled in The Hague, where she currently resides. The exhibition that will be held in Zaragoza means for the artist the fulfillment of one of her most intimate longings, as she commented after meeting with the museum’s officials: “It was like a dream: I wanted to exhibit in Zaragoza and to do so here, in the museum of one of my masters. My great master”. A dream fulfilled that has given rise to one of the most important exhibitions of this beginning of 2019.
