The Shed, New Multidisciplinary Arts Center in New York

The arts center The Shed will open its doors in the spring of 2019 with the aim of giving visibility to all kinds of artistic disciplines, by established artists as well as by emerging or unknown creators.

The Hudson Yards, the banks of the Hudson River located on the east side of Manhattan (New York), are watching a structure rise that is destined to become emblematic. It is the future home of The Shed, the multidisciplinary arts center that will be inaugurated in the city on 5 April 2019. An institution born with a groundbreaking calling, with the aim of eliminating the distance between art and viewer imposed by conventional museums. From the very entrance, the architectural barriers are removed in order to turn the center into a space that invites one to come in. “Warm, welcoming and generous to all”: these are words from the presentation on the center’s official website, www.theshed.org. “A cultural hub that takes artistic risks. A place for enriching creative experiences”.

The building is the work of the studio Diller Scofidio+Renfro and has a floor area of 2,300 square meters, a theater with a capacity for 500 people and an open space of more than 1,800 m². This space incorporates a large retractable shell, which makes it possible to close it off and turn it into an enormous industrial hangar for all kinds of events. If the architecture of The Shed is striking, the program with which it intends to fire the starting gun is no less so. Five concerts of African American music directed by the filmmaker Steve McQueen, the presentation of the staged-pictorial collaboration «Reich Richter Part Two» between the musician Steve Reich and the artist Gerard Richter, and the six concerts scheduled for May featuring the Icelandic musician Björk will be the highlights of the inaugural year. Beginning in 2019, New York will have a new artistic and cultural landmark to add to its powerful offering.
