Artist Benji Liebmann Chooses Spain to Show His Work to the World

The piece The Tryptich, created expressly for the gallery, can be admired in Marta Moriarty’s Art Window space. At the same time, Liebmann will present a book of his drawings in Madrid.

Benji Liebmann (Johannesburg, 1953) was born in South Africa in turbulent times. The son and grandson of refugees who fled Nazi Germany and the Russian pogroms, his life has always been marked by one passion: art. Today Liebmann is a figure of public importance in his country, but his work as an artist is something he has always kept in the private sphere. Reluctant to show his creations, his friendship with Marta Moriarty has been the trigger for him to exhibit, at last, one of his magnificent works. From 23 May the gallery will show the piece The Tryptich, created by the artist, in its Art Window space. On the opening day the book Benji Liebmann. Drawings will also be presented, published by TSU Libros: the presentation will take place at the Club Matador in Madrid, and will be accompanied by a performance by the South African artist Manthe Ribanne.

As for The Tryptich, the artist does not hesitate to reveal his creative process. The work “took shape over six months, starting from the contemplation of a large sheet of paper cut to the size of Marta’s window. It has been growing and shrinking day after day by making marks and erasing them. It has disappointed me as many times as it has thrilled me. It depends greatly on the prevailing mood… and on the light. In some respects it is a reflection on light, and on how light alters our perception of things“. Suggestive and subtle, Liebmann’s art renders images inspired by nature, perception and the deepest reaches of consciousness through strokes of graphite on white paper. Midway between the real and the imagined world, between the figurative and the abstract, his creations seek to transport the viewer to “some place free of the bonds of reason and concrete experience“. Benji Liebmann is also the founder and director of the NIROX Foundation Trust, a non-profit organization that promotes and disseminates the arts in South Africa.
