“La memoria esculpida”: Three Years of Conversations with Martin Chirino

After the recent death of the sculptor Martin Chirino, the Galaxia Gutenberg publishing house publishes the conversations held between Chirino and the journalist Antonio Puente over the last three years.

A solver of contradictions and a passionate stoic. Martin Chirino was that, and he was also much more. His death in March 2019 left world art and culture without a landmark figure: an intellectual of image and thought. The man who gave shape to the wind and to music through solid materials such as iron. Chirino’s figure and legacy will always remain alive thanks to his magnificent work, but also to the book La memoria esculpida, published by Galaxia Gutenberg with the collaboration of the Martin Chirino Foundation for Art and Thought. On 14 May the publisher presented the book to the media at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, an event also attended by Marta Chirino, the artist’s daughter. The book is the result of the conversations that the journalist Antonio Puente (also present at the press conference) held over three years with Martin Chirino, halfway between his home in the Canary Islands and his Madrid residence.

During the event, the exhibition Mover el Horizonte, organized by the Marlborough Gallery of Barcelona to show the sculptor’s latest work, was also presented. The exhibition is a continuation of Martin Chirino en su Finisterre, the show that could be visited in early 2018 at the gallery’s space in Madrid. The publication of La memoria esculpida coincides in time with the exhibition, thus building an essential tribute to one of the most important artists in the field of sculpture and abstraction. Martin Chirino developed his work and his research around iron, a fascinating material for its malleable, solid and primal quality; as Antonio Puente commented during the event, he was the first artist to set out to give shape to the wind. Inspired by Guanche culture and by the Atlantic spirit of the Canary archipelago (as a point of convergence of European, African and American cultures), his artistic career cannot be understood without delving into his thought and his vision of poetry, the visual arts and the word. La memoria esculpida and Mover el horizonte awaken Martin Chirino again and reveal once more his solid, airy and free soul.
