Laure Prouvost: Retrospective and Venice Biennale

The artist will represent France at the art event of the year. In the meantime, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp is dedicating to her the largest retrospective of her work organized to date.

Invention and reality / lie and truth. These are concepts intrinsically bound together in their contradictory conception, something of which the artist Laure Prouvost is fully aware. This year, 2019, the French creator will witness two events of enormous significance in her career. In May 2018 it was confirmed that Prouvost will be France’s representative at the 2019 Venice Biennale, becoming the third woman to represent the Gallic nation at the event. Meanwhile, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp (Belgium) has just opened the largest retrospective exhibition of her work organized to date. The show will remain open until May and brings together a large number of pieces created by the artist over the last fifteen years, including her most recent large-format installations.

Prouvost is one of the most unclassifiable and provocative artists on the current scene. Recently, her presence at a dinner held in her honor by the New Museum and the fashion house Alexander McQueen caused a considerable stir. During the event, the artist expressed her gratitude by telling the dinner guests that her grandmother, still alive, used to tie herself by the ankles to an airplane (piloted by her grandfather) and fly naked, floating through the sky. The museum’s director, Massimiliano Gioni, hastened to put Prouvost’s statements into context, explaining to his tablemates that Prouvost’s work is based precisely on “mixing fiction and reality”. In addition to the retrospective and the biennale, this year the artist will also perform at Performatik19, the Performing Arts Biennial that will take place in Brussels.
