In June 2019, the MK Gallery (Milton Keynes, United Kingdom) will unveil its new look in grand style with the opening of Paula Rego: Obedience & Defiance, a major retrospective devoted to the indispensable Portuguese artist. At present the art gallery remains closed for refurbishment: the works include the construction of a large extension by the studio 6a architects, which will double the gallery’s usable space. For the design of the new space, the studio has drawn on the collaboration of the artists Nils Norman and Gareth Jones. The reopening is scheduled for March 2019.

The exhibition with which the new MK Gallery will introduce itself to the public brings together a large selection of works by a magnificent contemporary artist, Paula Rego. The show is the Portuguese creator’s first retrospective in the United Kingdom in 10 years, and it includes works created from the 1960s to the present day. In the selection one will be able to admire pieces never before exhibited, always centered on the figure of woman and her presence (or absence) within the sociocultural environment. The exhibition will display emblematic pieces such as Dog Woman (1994) or Joseph’s Dream (1990) and will share the space with another important show, devoted to the hyperrealist George Stubbs.
